After the death of her husband, William Magee Seton and her subsequent conversion to Catholicism, Elizabeth was no longer accepted in her previous social and Family| circles, leaving her a poor widow with five young children. At the invitation of Bishop Carroll, Elizabeth relocated her Family| to Baltimore, where she founded a school. She was soon joined by other women and formed the Daughters of Charity of Saint Joseph, serving as the first superior of that order.
