So much to be happy about

The 1988 song by Bobby McFerrin ‘Don’t Worry Be Happy’ was an international hit. How could it not be with a catchy jingle and inspiring words like:
‘In every life we have some trouble
But when you worry, you make it double
Don’t worry, be happy Don’t worry, be happy now.’
We all have days when smiling at the world is the last thing we feel like doing. But today may be one of those days when a smile is easier to come by because it’s the International Day of Happiness.
Celebrated annually on March 20, this year’s theme is Happiness Forever.
In 2011, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution recognising happiness as a “fundamental human goal”. As such, the UN recognises calls for “a more inclusive, equitable and balanced approach to economic growth that promotes the happiness and well-being of all peoples.
There is much to be joyous about at this time of year.
As Catholics we are about to celebrate Christianity’s holiest of weeks. On Sunday we celebrate Palm Sunday when Jesus enters Jerusalem on a donkey and is feted by large crowds and a week later, we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection.
Initially, it is a time of great sadness when on Good Friday Jesus is put to death by His Roman oppressors, but sheer happiness soon follows with the discovery of His empty tomb three days later.
The risen Jesus gives us hope of eternal life. If that doesn’t put a smile on your face nothing will.
