The Qualities of a Survivor

“Do not judge me by my success, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.”

~ Nelson Mandela ~

A survivor possesses several key qualities that enable them to overcome adversity and emerge stronger from difficult situations.  These include resilience, adaptability, determination, courage and resourcefulness.

  • Resilience is the ability to bounce back from setbacks and persevere in the face of challenges, showing that no difficulty is final.
  • Adaptability involves being flexible and willing to adjust to changing circumstances, seeing new situations as opportunities to grow.
  • Determination is the drive to keep going despite obstacles or setbacks, even when the path is hard.
  • Courage is the willingness to face fear and take risks to achieve a goal.  It opens the door to possibilities that we might otherwise miss.
  • Resourcefulness is the ability to find creative solutions to problems and make the most of available resources, focusing on ways to move forward.

Survivors are also often characterised by a positive attitude, a sense of purpose and a strong support system.  They’re able to maintain hope and optimism even in the face of adversity and draw strength from the people around them.

These qualities are a combination of mental, emotional and social strengths that enable individuals to overcome challenges and thrive in tough situations.
