Campaign to target infant and maternal health

A campaign targeting maternal and newborn health will begin on World Health Day on Monday (April 7).

Titled Healthy beginnings, hopeful futures, the campaign will run for 12 months and urge governments and health communities to increase efforts to end preventable maternal and newborn deaths. It will also prioritise women’s longer-term health and well-being.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says based on current estimates, about 300,000 women lose their life due to pregnancy or childbirth each year, while more than two million babies die in their first month and a similar number are stillborn.

And going on current trends, four out of five countries are off track to meet targets for improving maternal survival by 2030 and one in three will not meet targets for reducing newborn deaths.

WHO says those figures are unacceptable.

‘Women and families everywhere need high quality care that supports them physically and emotionally, before, during and after birth. Health systems must evolve to manage the many health issues that impact maternal and newborn health. These not only include direct obstetric complications but also mental health conditions, noncommunicable diseases and family planning.’
