Focussing on families

For more than 76 years families have been central to The Majellan. Since our first newsletter in 1948, our focus has been on issues affecting families and helping families to be the best they can be.

The United Nations (UN) also has a special interest in families and in 1993 introduced the International Day of Families which is observed annually on May 15. This year’s theme is ‘Family-Oriented Policies for Sustainable Development.’

The theme highlights the significance of integrating family perspectives into development policies to achieve the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and will support preparations for the Second World Summit for Social Development in November.

The day aims to raise awareness about family-related issues and promote the importance of family-oriented policies. Various events are planned, including workshops, seminars, exhibitions, and public discussions. These activities aim to connect communities in conversations about families and the policies that support them.

In schools, students participate in activities such as speech competitions, drawing sessions, and family-themed projects, fostering a deeper understanding of the importance of family bonds.

The event also provides an opportunity to reflect on the enormous challenges families face, especially in Third World countries, such as economic inequalities, access to education, and work-life balance. By focusing on family-oriented policies, it encourages governments and organisations to consider the needs and well-being of families.

This approach supports the broader objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals, emphasising the link with the health and well-being of families.
