GRACE IN VICTORY AND DEFEAT
“Sports do not build character. They reveal it.”
~ John Wooden ~
Â
Sport is more than just winning games or staying active. It can teach us many valuable lessons that
help us throughout life.
Â
When we play sport, we learn the importance of teamwork. We discover how to work with others,
support one another and share both successes and disappointments. Sport also teaches discipline
and commitment. Regular practice helps us understand that improvement comes through effort,
patience and perseverance.
Â
Another important lesson is respect. Good sportsmanship encourages us to respect teammates,
opponents, coaches and officials. We learn that everyone deserves to be treated fairly and with
kindness.
Â
Sport can also build confidence. As we develop new skills and overcome challenges, we begin to
believe in our abilities. At the same time, sport teaches humility by helping us accept that we will
not always win and that setbacks can help us grow.
Â
Perhaps most importantly, sport teaches resilience. It shows us how to keep going when things are
difficult and how to learn from mistakes rather than give up. The lessons gained through sport can
stay with us long after the final whistle, helping us become stronger, more caring and responsible
people.

Â

Â
Dear God, grant us the grace to win with humility and lose with dignity. May our journey reflect true
character, embodying integrity and respect. Help us inspire others through our actions, both in
victory and defeat and leave a lasting impact that extends beyond our achievements,
influencing all aspects of our lives. Amen.Â
