Caring for our great Southern Land

Landcare Week, which runs from Monday until August 9, is about working together to protect and restore our natural environment.

This year’s theme, ‘Experience Landcare,’ will hopefully inspire Australians to discover how caring for the land can greatly benefit wildlife, waterways and local communities.

There are more than 6,000 Landcare groups and 100,000 volunteers who help restore bushland, improve soil, protect coastlines and rivers and support sustainable farming.

Landcare Australia says individuals and families can participate in many ways. People can join a local Landcare, Bushcare, Coastcare or “Friends of” group and volunteer at a planting, clean-up or habitat-restoration day.

At home, they can plant native flowers and shrubs, remove weeds, create shelter and install water fountains for wildlife, compost food scraps and reduce their use of chemicals in the garden. People can also collect litter from parks, beaches and waterways.

No matter how big or small, every action helps create healthier environments and a more ecological Australia.
