A day for the young
This year’s theme is Different Contexts, Common Aspirations, acknowledging that young people grow up in very different circumstances.
Â
Some live in wealthy cities with extensive educational and employment opportunities, while others face poverty, conflict, geographic isolation, climate disasters or limited access to technology.
Â
There is particular emphasis this year on underdeveloped and landlocked developing countries and small island developing states. These communities often experience serious obstacles to opportunity, including unemployment, poor infrastructure, climate vulnerability and inadequate services.
Â
However, the UN claims young people are not just receiving support but are creating their own digital solutions, establishing social enterprises, leading environmental campaigns and strengthening their local communities.

Â
The UN adds, ‘International Youth Day encourages governments, schools, workplaces and community organisations to listen to young people and include them in decision-making. Although young people’s circumstances may vary, their shared hopes can unite communities and inspire positive global action.’
