CHOOSING PEACE
“It isn’t enough to talk about peace. One must believe in it. And it isn’t
enough to believe in it. One must work at it.”
~ Eleanor Roosevelt ~
Â
The International Day of Peace on September 21 gives us reason to consider what peace really
means in today’s world.
Â
We live among people with different backgrounds, beliefs, opinions and experiences. We will not
always agree, and perhaps we are not meant to. Peace does not require everyone to think the
same way. It asks us to recognise our differences without allowing them to pull us apart.
Â
At a time when disagreement can quickly become anger and division, there is value in finding
common ground. Families, neighbourhoods and communities are stronger when people can
live alongside one another with respect, even when they see things differently.
Â
The hope for a more peaceful world belongs to every generation. We may not have control over
events happening far beyond our own lives, but we can influence the kind of community we
help create.
Â
On this International Day of Peace, may we look beyond what divides us and remember how much
we have in common. A better tomorrow begins when peace becomes something we value not
only in the world, but in the way we choose to live.
Â
Â

Â
Dear Lord, help us to live peacefully with one another, especially when we do not agree. Teach us to respect
our differences and recognise what we share. May there be greater understanding between people,
communities and nations, and may peace have a lasting place in our world. Amen.
