To date, there have been 652 H5 bird flu cases reported nation-wide. However, the number of total deaths is higher with about one thousand terns confirmed to have died in South Australia alone.
At the start of the Season of Creation on September 1, Pope Leo said, “Let us imagine a world in which the energies currently invested in war are directed toward integral human development”.
“Today, we are witnessing many crises and much human suffering. At the same time, it seems that the disruption to the harmonious balance of creation is accelerating. These phenomena are not unrelated; they are a single plea for healing and peace arising from a wounded world,” said the pontiff.
The 2026 theme is ‘Living Water’, inspired by Ezekiel 47:1-12, which describes life-giving water flowing from God’s sanctuary, restoring ecosystems and sustaining life. The theme highlights:
- Ecological restoration: Healing degraded ecosystems and reviving waters
- Spiritual renewal: Connecting faith, baptism, and transformation
- Human responsibility: Stewardship of natural resources, especially water
- Climate justice: Supporting communities affected by water scarcity and pollution.
The Vatican had asked the Church and other Christian communities to renew their commitment to creation through prayer, conversion, and concrete acts of stewardship.
St Francis is remembered for his love of nature and animals. He died aged forty-four in 1226.
