A day to honour selfless parents

Having parents to guide and nurture us, especially in our early years, is crucial. We learn so much from them, even if we are unaware of the influence they are having on us.
That’s one of the reasons in 2012 the United Nations chose June 1 as the Global Day of Parents to recognise the important role parents and caregivers play in raising children and supporting communities.
The 2026 theme is ‘Together for Parents’. The event is an opportunity to appreciate all parents for their “selfless commitment to children and their lifelong sacrifice towards nurturing this relationship.” Schools, community organisations, and local councils organised activities such as family fun days, parenting workshops, cultural events, and appreciation programs to honour parents from all backgrounds.
Many Australian communities also focused on the challenges parents face, including balancing work and family life, mental health pressures, and cost of living increases. A recent report stated that one in three families are struggling to put food on their tables every day. Charities and food relief organisations have reported a sharp rise in demand, with more families seeking emergency food assistance .

Government agencies and support organisations used the occasion to promote family services, parenting resources, and child wellbeing programs.
The celebration reflected Australia’s vibrant multicultural society, with families from diverse cultural traditions sharing stories and values about parenting. And UNICEF used the day to highlight the time, care and support caregivers need to give children a strong start in life.
The annual event is a reminder that families are essential for building compassionate, healthy, and flourishing communities.
