A drop of humanity saves lives

It is not a difficult process, and it can save countless lives. People who donate blood are among the most generous and selfless in the community.

World Blood Donor Day on Sunday, therefore, gives us the opportunity to recognise the millions of voluntary blood donors who roll up their sleeves to help others. Their kindness saves lives and exemplifies the spirit of solidarity.

This year the event honours hope.

The World Health Organisation says, “Because millions of patients around the world rely on blood transfusions every year, hope flows through every donation … yet many countries continue to face shortages and unequal access to safe blood and blood products, particularly in low-and middle-income settings.’

The campaign’s objectives are to raise public awareness about the need for regular blood and plasma donations and the impact they have on patients’ lives; to encourage both new and existing donors to give blood regularly; to highlight the positive impact of blood donors on the health and well-being of others and to advocate the values of compassion and community through blood donation.

Another major aim is to rally government support to invest in and aid national blood programs so those in need can access safe blood transfusions.
