Forgiveness is the panacea for broken families

Pope Francis’ monthly prayer intention for March is for ‘families in crisis’.

The pope invites the Church to pray for this intention in his latest video, which was released through the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network. The video was prepared prior to the pope’s hospitalisation for double pneumonia.

In the video Pope Francis acknowledges the difficulties facing families today.

“We all dream about a beautiful, perfect family. But there’s no such thing as a perfect family, for each family has its own problems, as well as its tremendous joys,” he says.

Every member of the family is important because each is unique, Pope Francis adds, but often their differences cause conflict and painful wounds. “The best medicine to heal the pain of a wounded family is forgiveness.” But forgiveness requires giving “our family members another chance”.

Pope Francis cites God’s “infinite” patience as an example. He “forgives us, lifts us up, and gives us a new start.”

The pope says pardoning one another renews the family and provides hope. “Let us pray that broken families might discover the cure for their wounds through forgiveness, rediscovering each other’s gifts, even in their differences,” Pope Francis says.
