World Day of Migrants and Refugees on September 27 reminds us of the many people who have left their

homes in search of safety, peace and a better future.

Leaving behind family, friends and the life they know can take great courage. For some, this is a personal

choice, while others are forced to leave because of war, persecution, poverty or hardship. Whatever their

circumstances, each person carries their own story, memories and dreams for what lies ahead.

Starting life in a new country is not always easy. Learning another language, adjusting to different customs

and finding a place in the community can all be challenging and take time. Patience, understanding and a

friendly welcome can help make the transition a little easier.

Behind the word migrant or refugee is a person – someone seeking security, dignity and the chance to build

a new life. Whatever our background or situation, every person deserves to be treated with kindness

and respect.

Everyone needs a place where they feel they belong.
