Jubilee appearance of Virgin statue

The Year of Hope as part of the pope’s Jubilee Year continues from June to August. The theme that centres on Pilgrims of Hope was chosen to promote peacebuilding in a world susceptible to climate change and wars.

It’s been revealed that on the Jubilee of Marian Spirituality in October, the original statue of Our Lady of Fatima will be taken to Rome. The image of the Virgin will be on display at a Mass in St Peter’s Square on Sunday October 12.

The sculpture is the work of Portuguese artist José Ferreira Thedim. The statue was created in 1920 and is usually housed in the Chapel of the Apparitions of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima. In 1917 the Virgin appeared six times to the shepherds Lucia dos Santos, aged 10, Jacinta Marto, 7, and nine-year-old Francesco Marto.

Jubilee years are times of reconciliation and renewal that occur every 25 years and have a historical and biblical precedent which can be found in the Book of Leviticus.

The Holy Year in local churches will end on December 28. The closing of the Holy Door of the Papal Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican will occur on the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord on January 6, marking the end of the Jubilee.
