School holiday fun

It is an irrefutable fact that grandparents are doing more of the heavy lifting with their grandchildren than previous generations.

The cost of living and a range of other financial issues have contributed to this seismic change. Not that many grandparents are complaining. Spending time with their grandchildren brings much joy and satisfaction.

So, it’s school holiday time. A mix of simple, low-cost activities and a flexible routine can make the experience enjoyable for the whole family.

Outdoor activities are always a great starting point, as long as the weather is not inclement. Visits to local parks, short walks, or even backyard games like cricket or hide-and-seek help children burn energy. Gardening can also be both fun and educational, allowing children to learn about plants while getting their hands dirty.

And let’s be honest, youngsters love getting their hands dirty!

Creative indoor activities are equally important. Arts and crafts such as drawing, painting, or making simple DIY projects can keep children occupied for hours. Baking is another favourite, where kids can help measure ingredients and decorate treats, turning it into both a learning and bonding experience.

Grandparents can also share their own hobbies and skills, be it knitting, storytelling, music, or woodworking. And reading together, either together or individually, helps develop literacy while providing a calming pause in the day.

Games are essential for both fun and development. Board games, puzzles, and card games nurture problem-solving, patience, and teamwork. For quieter moments, a movie can add excitement and variety.

So, grandparents don’t need elaborate plans to keep the grandkids happy; as well as love, children value attention, conversation, and shared experiences.

Enjoy the school holidays!
