Social justice for all, not just for a few
Most people will not be aware or acknowledge The World Day of Social Justice tomorrow, but it should be more than just a reference on people’s calendars.
Â
While we can’t individually change the world overnight and move millions from poverty to a reasonable standard of living, collectively, however, we can make a difference.
Â
Many Catholic organisations are working in poorer, third world countries assisting people to lift their standard of living and improving their education and healthcare.
Â
Catholic schools also play their part through fundraisers and other charitable events to raise money for the marginalised and those in need.
Â
Pope Francis strongly advocates for creating a more equitable society by addressing systemic inequalities, prioritising the needs of the poor and marginalised, and calling for strong action to combat issues like poverty, climate change, and migration. He believes everyone has a part to play to ensure all people have access to basic human rights and dignity.
Â
So, what does The World for Social justice Day involve? Its purpose is to
- Combat poverty, unemployment, and social exclusion
- Promote gender equity
- Ensure access to social well-being and justice for all
- And to achieve social development for all
Social justice goals include:
- Creating a just society where everyone has equal rights, opportunities, and access
- Applying human rights in all spheres of life
- Respecting diversity, and
- Providing access to social protection
The World Day of Social Justice was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007 to promote social justice, equality, and human rights. It was first observed in 2009.
