Thanks for the memories

It will be the end of an era in May next year when Majellan House in Brighton passes from the Redemptorist community to its new owner.

The Brighton property was placed on the market in 2021 and was sold earlier this year.

The Redemptorists bought the property in 1963 and for almost 60 years it served as a house of worship and as the mailing hub for The Majellan magazine. The Redemptorists first began their ‘magazine mission’ in Ballarat in the 1940s.

The sale coincides with The Majellan’s 75th anniversary, so this issue is partly dedicated to the magazine that has brought so much joy to so many.

The house next to the Brighton Yacht Club that overlooks the sea was built in 1923. William and Florence Carr lived in their home they called Kuring-gai for about 40 years. But after Florence died in 1964, three years after her husband, the estate was sold to the Redemptorists.

Majellan House appeared in Australian Home Beautiful on three separate occasions (1925, 1965 and 1995), including on the front cover twice. The first ever Home Beautiful front cover in 1925 included the headline, ‘As good a house as money can buy’.

While we sadly say goodbye to Majellan House, there will always be the memories.
