The world is your oyster

Many of us will remember sitting final exams at school. It can be a challenging time. The pressure of studying hard, the pressure of parental expectations, the pressure of success, and the pressure we put on ourselves.
It can feel like our future rests on just two or three weeks.
Â
At this time of the year thousands of school students across the country are about to sit or are sitting their first exam. Years of education will culminate in a series of assessments with young people hoping to get the required results. Some will be vying for entry into law or medicine while others may be more interested in the trades.
Â
Come December, many will be happy with the outcome while some will be disappointed. But their individual journeys won’t end there. If a student does not achieve the required entry into their profession of choice, it is not the be-all and end-all, though it may seem like the end of time.
Â
While it is many years since I sat for my Year 12 exams (or matriculation as it was then called), I distinctly remember the pressure of trying to figure out what I wanted to do in life. Of more concern was not knowing my career path. Move forward forty years and there are far more careers and opportunities around than when I finished school in the 1970s.
So, some tips to help with stress.
- Learn relaxing techniques
- Think positively
- Get plenty of sleep
- Do breathing exercises
- Stay focussed
- Maintain a good daily routine
- Eat properly
- Take breaks between studying
So, good luck to everyone who is sitting their final exams and try not to put too much pressure on yourselves. Success is not measured by one set of criteria, i.e., final exams.

Without wanting to sound too clichéd, remember, the world is your oyster.
